Boris Mikhailov - Case History

I was sure I had posted something about this great photographer previously, and tonight I only wanted to update it, due to the bloody events occuring on the Kiev's Maïdan place (Maïdan meaning independance, which is quite dramatic when you see that this conflict is between those who want to be part of Russian's space and those who want to be part of European's one, where's real independance here?). But actually, I hadn't, and the pictures slept in my computer Scoptophilia store. Terrible mistake. Born in 1938, one of his strongest series is the one he realized in 1997-98 and called Case history. He said that it could have been called Clinical file of a disease. You'll know the reason why and much more in clicking here and read his comments about some of the cliches. I don't know what he's thinking about what's happening in Ukraine right now, but that's not the point. This is the opportunity to rectify a guilty omission on this blog. And to share a thought with the victims who left their life on the Maïdan place. Hope things won't go on on this bloody and deadly pathway.

Andrew Lucas - Various

Usually, I don't like to post vanilla erotic pictures since it's not my cuppa tea, but the Russia-based photographer Andrew Lucas (not a really Russian name but surely a peculiar family story) provides here and there some powerful images, and even if the models are desperately fitting the physical norms of this genre (and for me, seem not even to be nude since their physionomies are so associated with a sort of skin clothes), the postures and scenographies are here (but there's a load of more usual stuff in his collection) really disturbing and disturbed, sexually explicit (playing with porn codes) and often on the boarder of misogynistic imagery but always visually strong (yes the sentence is too long but I'm too lazy to cut it). An esthetic pause in the usual content of this blog. The Andrew Lucas site here.

Harry Cloud - Proud mama (the happiest day of my life)

Harry Cloud has sent to me 2 more shots of this weird series. Kind to him and I added them with pleasure (maybe not yours if you think these pictures are sick and infamous). Don't forget Harry Cloud is first a musician and that he's doing a marginal but highly creative and interesting work by his own. His last release (Red Barn) can be heard here and it's a sort of masterpiece.

Harry Cloud is a musician who is far above much of the usual shitty dolls majors or independant labels try to sell us as geniuses. His last album, released under the Single Mothers name (but now under his own name) was in my Top 10 fave LPs of last year (see here) and the demos of his new one (called apparently Ocean Song) will certainly be in my top 10 of this one if I'm still alive next December (both can be listened to below). He's doing music for quite a while now and it's a rather large amount of stuff you can find on his Soundcloud page (here). But of course, on Scoptophilia, it's not his music activity that made me post about him, but this weird series of pictures showing him as a young mum and her baby in a rather bloody and violent (more grotesque than realistic) scene. Impossible not to show it here, it fits well with my usual inclination to find food for thought in any borderline imagery. And it makes me remember my youth when I used to destroy a doll on stage. Seems so far now. One day Harry Cloud will maybe look at these pictures with the same nostalgia and sadness (fucking time making of us these old ugly people) than mine tonight. The whole series here (actually I posted the whole series)

Olivier Christinat - Nue

Born in France in 1963, this photograph provides with this nude series a fascinating demonstration of the visual power of nudity (here female) to question the condition of human body, sometimes strangely vulnerable compared to most animal ones. Without feathers or hairs, the skin makes us really nude animals. No sensuality here. It's more anatomy than erotism. Let's say an emotional anatomy. One function often omitted when talking about functional anatomy. Sometimes these pictures seem to be paintings. If you can read French, there's a long statement about this series here but I'm not sure sometimes all these words are useless stuff, sort of cerebral masturbation. However mine too so silence. PS. The models are different girls.
